CHALLENGE


LABLINKS is the new online community connecting scientists and laboratories around the world with the specific goal of driving scientific innovation through shared learning and information exchange. LABLINKS approached Luzildab to help them develop a series of virtual reality spaces to be used to hold virtual conferences, conduct meetings and deliver product presentations. The idea was that these VR spaces would facilitate collaboration and knowledge sharing, by bringing delegates together from anywhere in the world.

LABLINKS had already developed a web-based VR destination on the Mozilla Hubs platform with the digital agency Calvium but wanted to build on this offering to be able to offer its members spaces of their own in which they could organise meetings, gatherings and presentations. The desire was to offer LABLINKS members a choice from three different room options, from very simple spaces for 1-1 meetings to complex multi-space solutions that could be used to host virtual fairs.

SOLUTION


Using a combination of 3D design tools and VR platform technology, Mike van der Noordt designed and delivered to LABLINKS three key spaces. He used the 3d design software Cinema 4d to create spaces that look professional and technically sophisticated. This process enabled him to create designs that surpassed those normally associated with the Mozilla Hub platform.

Cinema 4d allowed Mike to create highly rendered environments with detailed lighting and finely textured surfaces, proving cleaner, clearer and more lifelike depictions of the VR spaces.
The spaces were then imported into Mozilla’s authoring platform SPOKE where interactive functionalities like waypoints, external links, and media playback were added.
Finally, the spaces were published on Mozilla Hubs and linked to the Lablanks.io platform.

Our process for developing any VR space is broken down into four key stages:
1. Client consultation and creative kick-off to define business objectives and criteria for the VR spaces
2. Designing and building a highly optimized, pre-lit space in a 3D software application.
3. The addition of technical capabilities like waypoints, external links and interactive media using Mozilla’s authoring environment Spoke.
4. The publishing and implementation of the space on Mozilla Hubs.
