Challenge

Palmesus Classics is a series of concert performed over two nights in which popular Norwegian singers perform with a Symphony Orchestra to cover famous songs. The Classics are part of Norway’s Palmesus Music Festival and a collaboration between the recently opened Kilden Concert Hall and Kunstilo, the brand-new contemporary art museum, being built beside the concert hall on the waterfront of Kristiansand in Norway.

The partnership between the concert hall and the contemporary art museum has produced an event that combines great musical performances with beautiful and innovative visual design. Part dance party, part concert and completely spectacular, Palmesus Classics consists of a light show, pyrotechnics, a symphony orchestra, pop stars, DJs and live visuals to create a truly entertaining event.

For the second time in the concert’s three-year history, the Kuntsilo team invited Luzidlab’s CXO Mike van der Noordt to design and create the live visuals for the event. Mike was able to bring to the project his vast experience as a digital Creative, having produced many interactive installations and live visual performances across Europe over the last twenty years.

To maintain the Classics reputation as a “must do” experience, the Kuntsilo team were keen to do something magical in 2022, to deliver two nights of programming that surpassed the audiences’ expectations. For that special touch they turned to Mike, asking him for inspiration on how to elevate the visual impact for the concerts, whilst also adding an unexpected twist.

Solution

Using Nordic mythology as a starting point, Mike produced sixteen abstract visual pieces for the shows. Each performance was paired with a singular digital work inspired by one of the Norse gods. The digital visuals were made up of elements that were mixed live at the concert to create graphic videos that reacted in real time to the music being performed. The blend of Mike’s artistry and his use of innovative technology enabled him to create spectacular compositions that were uniquely tied to each performance. To provide the magic the Kunstilo team were hoping for, Mike suggested the use of Augmented Reality as an integral part of the show.  During three instrumental performances on the evenings, the live visuals would take on a life of their own, AR elements would enable the visual spectacle to float off the stage and out into the auditorium.  The audience could use their mobile phones to view the three-dimensional works of art floating above their heads: a constellation of far-off planets, floating mountains with colourful waterfalls  and radiating growing crystals. To achieve this effect Mike pushed the limits of AR, combining the AR elements with the live visuals in a completely novel way. Developing Augmented Reality for a live event of this scale was a challenge. Elements that had to be considered included: allowing for the sheer size of the venue, ensuring the quality of the experience, working with ever-changing light conditions, and delivering for the plethora of devices on which the AR needed to work seamlessly and efficiently. Of his work, Mike said: “With events like Palmesus we have entered into a new and exciting moment in entertainment. Artists are increasingly incorporating these new technologies into their work and these new tools allow artists to build new worlds, break boundaries and create completely novel experiences for audiences”.
